Supporting the Industry

In the aftermath of the news of the collapse of Carillion, Build UK has been working with its members, the industry and Government to assist in understanding the impact on the supply chain and what the next steps needed are.

Information for the supply chain

The Government’s Insolvency Service has confirmed that work has paused on all Carillion construction sites, pending decisions as to how and if they will be restarted.

Build UK and CECA, working with Wedlake Bell, have produced a factsheet for those with outstanding payments with Carillion, to guide them in the forthcoming process. PwC has met with the banks who have committed to agreeing special arrangements for affected creditors, as have HMRC.

CITB is seeking to contact and place Carillion’s 1400 apprentices. They are offering any grant for employers to take on these apprentices and have a dedicated webpage offering support for employers.

Leading the Industry

Build UK published a statement on Monday, when news of Carillion’s liquidation was announced.

Build UK has attended three meetings with the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and PwC to raise the industry’s concerns about the risk of a domino effect in the supply chain and the need for Government to extend support for private sector projects.

Build UK and CECA has published a statement calling on Government to offer support for the supply chain. The Government has since set up a taskforce to monitor and advise on mitigating the impacts of Carillion’s liquidation on construction firms, particularly SMEs and those working in the sector.

Build UK has also had a strong presence in the media, with Suzannah Nichol, Build UK Chief Executive, speaking to the BBC News, The Guardian, The Telegraph and The Times. Suzannah has also been interviewed on Newsnight, BBC News Live and Sky News.

Gathering Information

To ensure that Build UK can both support its members and provide information to the Government on the impact on the supply chain, it is asking for information on:

  • Specific challenges with any Carillion projects e.g. where sites are closed
  • Your plans and immediate actions to transfer project delivery
  • The amount(s) that businesses are owed and the % of turnover this represents
  • Contractors capacity to undertake project

Please send information, which will be treated in the strictest confidence to Laura Smith.
