Construction Deaths Fall as Industry Recovers
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has released provisional statistics showing that the number of construction fatalities dropped significantly last year, even though increased workloads meant there were more people working in the industry.
Safer working conditions and improved practices on site saw the number of deaths in the industry decrease from 44 in 2013/14 to 35 in 2014/15. The fatality rate among construction workers was 1.62 deaths per 100,000 workers, down from 1.98 the previous year and well below the five-year average of 2.07. In total, 24 directly employed operatives and 11 self-employed workers were killed along with four members of the public who died as a result of construction activity but they are not included in the industry records.

Following last year’s successful revisions to the online survey, companies can enter the information quickly and easily with their Accident Book to hand. Even if companies have not had any accidents over the last 12 months, we would still like to hear from you and you should be able to complete the survey in less than two minutes by responding to just four key questions.
The deadline for responses is 31 July 2015 and Specialist Contractors can submit their accident figures in confidence for the period 1 April 2014 to 31 March 2015 by completing the Accident Survey 2014/15.
