Background

At the beginning of 2015 the Construction Leadership Council announced (via its Industrial Strategy: Construction 2025) that industry should specify and promote card schemes carrying the CSCS logo with no equivalents accepted. These cards need to become smart enabled by 2020, to provide a consistent means of recognising that individuals working on construction sites have the required training and qualifications for their occupation.

The Build UK and CECA’s SmartCard Audit promotes the value of the smart technology used by CSCS and its affiliated schemes to drive increased industry uptake and highlight any expired and fraudulent cards.

Objective

To increase the use of smart technology within the construction industry by helping Build UK and CECA members to realise the benefits to their businesses, supply chains and the wider industry.

Outcome

Build UK and CECA members to annually check the CSCS and affiliated scheme cards of everyone entering their sites on a particular day in the final quarter of the year using smart technology wherever possible, to ensure they have the correct and in date training and qualifications for the occupation they are undertaking on site and to identify any expired and fraudulent cards.
